Intersection of Play - 2020

Cement Platform: 190”L x 150”w x 30”h | Electrical box: 23”L x 62”w X 60”h

Inspired by the joy and playfulness of families and children at the intersection of 42 Ave & 20 Street SW, Nicole transformed a graffiti littered “eye-sore” into a community painted asset celebrating the people and children of the local area.

Nicole Kurceba was jury-selected by the City of Calgary as an artist in the 2020 Community-Initiated Public Art Microprojects. Nicole received a public art municipal grant to complete her outdoor mural titled, “Intersection of Play.” Her proposal included not just her own contribution to the mural, but also a community painting event which Nicole marketed and hosted. The event invited people to participate in her painting, and successfully had over 150 participants. Nicole wanted the project to be something participants and residents of the community would be proud of.

This project was completed in October-November, 2020. See below for photos of the event and completed painting.

Thank you to the Calgary communities of Marda Loop, Garrison Woods and Altadore for supporting this project. With over 150 participants, it was such a delight to see so much enthusiasm for adding a little colour and joy to their area.
